God of War shifts focus to Laufey

Tuesday’s State of Play didn’t wrap up cleanly.

Sony dragged out more than twenty minutes of surprise gameplay. No trailer. Just raw footage from a new God of War. This one stars Laufey. Also known as Faye. She’s Kratos’ dead wife. The mother of Atreus.

We don’t know much yet. But the shift is massive. The protagonist changed. The setting? Even stranger. Players aren’t just climbing Yggdrasil. They’re exploring Everywhen.

“A land where ruthless gods from across mythology vie for a place overflowing with dangerous magic.”

It’s the afterlife of gods. Ruthless ones.

The video threw everything at the viewer. Egyptian myth. Mongolian legends. Sentient ribbons tethered to a sword. And the sword? Encased in what looked suspiciously like a D&D gelatinous cube.

The cube talks. It helps Faye fight. That’s the vibe.

The clip starts grim. It recaps 2018. Kratos burns her body. Then embers rise. They twist. A figure forms. Faye wakes up in what looks like Valhalla.

But something’s wrong.

An army is taking the land. Corrupting creatures. She gets cornered fast. Two leaders stand before her. Sekhmet from Egypt. Begtse from Mongolia. Gods of war. Naturally.

Combat feels familiar. Heavy swings. Combo chains. The cube assists in takedowns. It ends on a confrontation with Begtse. Cliffhanger style.

Deborah Ann Woll plays Faye. You remember her as Karen Page from Daredevil. Good choice.

Here’s what we know for sure.

  • PS5 exclusive
  • No release date
  • No price

Sony stayed tight-lipped on timing.

It works for now. The mystery sells. But will we see Faye’s face often? Or just her back?

Hard to say.

Who’s ready for this anyway.
