Who will really be online in 2025?
Look at the raw numbers. The story they tell is different from the panic we usually see in the headlines.
Most people don’t only dabble in the digital world anymore. they swim in it.
86% of all people surveyed aged 10 and over use the internet daily. Or almost every day.
Then there is the weekly crowd. 10% log in at least once a week.
The stragglers? Only 3% of people go online less than once a week.
The difference is huge.
But this is the turning point. Gender is not the deciding factor here. Not even close.
If you separate the data by boys and girls and men vs. women, the lines are almost parallel.
Take daily usage.
84% of girls and women go online every day or almost every day.
88% of boys and men do the same.
That’s a 4% difference. In the world of big data, this is statistical noise.
Now let’s look at weekly users only.
12% of women log in at least once a week.
Nine percent of men do the same.
It flips slightly. But hardly.
Then the less-than-weekly group.
Four percent of women.
Three percent of men.
3 percent.
A difference of even one percentage point doesn’t matter.

If you look at the age division, the numbers are clear. 16–24 year olds are at the forefront. 96% of survey respondents go online every day or almost every day. Not even close.
This was followed by 25-44 year olds with 94 percent. The battle for the first place was tight, but the young players took the upper hand. Those aged 45–64 ranked third with 84 percent. Then it drops to 79% among 10-15 year olds. The oldest age group (65+) ranked in the top five with 69 percent.
But connection means more than mere existence. It’s about purpose.
Another study on Internet usage revealed that 90% of users search for information about services and products. This is the main factor. Online banking services are followed by 57% and social networks by 55%.
When these percentages are broken down by age, they change dramatically.
96% of product and service searches are made by people aged 25–44. Older users (ages 45-64) follow closely at 92 percent. In the 16-24 age group, the proportion dropped to 89 percent. The proportion of elderly people is 86%. 10-15 year old children? Only 61 percent. They haven’t shopped yet. They are located elsewhere.
Online banking tells a different story. The highest group was 25–44-year-olds with 77 percent. The proportion of 45–64-year-olds was 58%. The share of the elderly is 46 percent. The proportion of 16–24-year-olds is surprisingly low, 42%. What about groups of 10-15 people? Only 3%. They have no money to bank.
Social Network Flip Script. 88% of the population are young people aged 16-24. In the 25–44 age group, the share dropped to 71 percent. The share of children (10-15 years old) was 64%. Older groups fall off a cliff. 40 percent were 45-64 years old. Senior? Only 21 percent.
Infrastructure deficiencies and broadband availability
Understanding how people use the Internet is pointless if there is no connection. Availability must be ascertained before forming a habit.
High download and upload speeds are desirable but not common in Germany. Now it’s 1-2 megabits per second (Mbps) almost everywhere. This is the starting point.
But if you need 6Mbps, things get tricky, especially in rural areas. Availability will decrease significantly.
16 Mbps only covers 63.2% of the area.
At a speed of 30 Mbps, the speed drops to 48.9 percent.
At a robust 50 Mbps, this is only 29.9%.
These percentages highlight the severe lack of high-speed infrastructure in rural areas. But it is important to note that high-quality broadband coverage above 16 Mbps is not only available in rural areas. It’s shrinking in semi-urban areas too. Even in urban centers, the coverage of these upper levels is decreasing. Maps are more broken than you think.
How digital transformation shapes urban landscapes
The Internet is more than just a tool. It shapes the physical world around us. It can bring opportunities and destroy others. This is both a curse and a blessing.
Once you accept this duality, you can begin to see where things are going.
Scenario 1: The end of the traditional office
The Internet brings flexibility to companies. Remote work through Skype video conferences has become commonplace. This is no longer a vision. This is the current situation.
But what happens when companies go fully digital? Flexible and location independent?
The look of the city is also changing.
In the next decades, the cityscape will probably change. Production plants equipped with computers and robots will become part of the economy. The massive office towers? They will be repurposed.
Maybe into coworking spaces. Maybe in an apartment building.
The structure of work is collapsing. The building is becoming obsolete.

Next is the issue of gifts.
The current system only sends a notification that says “John’s birthday is tomorrow”. that’s it. It’s pointless.
The new model is even deeper. I remember you and John eating sushi together three years ago. I know he really likes the leather jacket you bought him last time. It suggests a gift that actually fits. There is no longer a one-size-fits-all basket. No more guessing. The machines handle the logistics. You handle the joy.
