UOWD Launches AI Master’s to Address Growing Talent Gap

18

The University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD) is introducing a Master of Applied Artificial Intelligence program beginning in September 2026, alongside a Graduate Diploma in the same field. This move comes as demand for AI skills surges across the Gulf region, but qualified professionals remain scarce.

The Expanding AI Landscape in the UAE

The UAE is rapidly adopting artificial intelligence, with projections estimating a $320 billion contribution to the Middle East economy by 2030. However, like many global markets, the region faces a significant AI talent deficit. The World Economic Forum forecasts that nearly 23% of jobs worldwide will be reshaped by automation and AI by 2027, and McKinsey anticipates more than doubling the demand for advanced AI skills by 2030, particularly within the UAE.

The UOWD programs are designed to bridge this gap, focusing on practical application rather than purely theoretical knowledge. This is crucial because many organizations struggle to move AI models from the development phase into real-world deployment.

Program Details and Structure

The Master of Applied Artificial Intelligence is a 15–24-month program spanning 12 subjects. Enrollment windows open in September, January, and April. The curriculum covers key areas including:

  • Machine Learning
  • Deep Learning
  • Natural Language Processing
  • AI Solutions Design
  • MLOps (Machine Learning Operations)
  • Generative Models
  • AI Ethics and Governance

The Graduate Diploma provides a faster upskilling pathway, taking 12 months to complete eight subjects with the same per-subject fee structure.

Both programs are built on three core pillars: technical expertise in AI algorithms and data engineering, strategic alignment of AI with business goals, and hands-on application through labs, enterprise tools, and capstone projects. Students will also be supported in preparing for professional certifications from Microsoft, IBM, and Google.

Strategic Location and Global Recognition

UOWD’s Dubai Knowledge Park campus is strategically located near major tech hubs like Dubai Internet City and Dubai Media City, giving students access to over 2,700 companies including IBM, Microsoft, and Huawei.

Established in 1993 as the first international Australian university in the UAE, UOWD is part of a global network with campuses in Australia, Hong Kong, and Malaysia, ensuring international recognition of its qualifications.

A Rapidly Growing Field

The number of AI programs in the UAE has increased dramatically over the past decade. The British University in Dubai launched the country’s first AI degree (a Bachelor’s) in 2018. Today, over 25 UAE universities offer AI-related courses, including bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral research, and professional certifications. The pace of development has been particularly striking, with institutions such as Khalifa University, Heriot-Watt University Dubai, and the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (the world’s first AI graduate-level research university) all expanding their offerings.

The launch of these new programs at UOWD reflects a broader trend: the UAE is positioning itself as a regional leader in AI education and implementation, recognizing that a skilled workforce is essential to capitalize on the technology’s economic potential.
