Garmin Smartwatches Now Support WhatsApp Calls and Texts

Garmin has expanded functionality for select smartwatch models by integrating WhatsApp, enabling users to make calls, send texts, and access chat history directly from their wrists. The update, announced Tuesday, brings the Meta-owned messaging service to Garmin’s Fenix, Forerunner, Venus, and Vívioactive lines. This marks WhatsApp as the sole third-party messaging app currently available on Garmin devices.

Why This Matters

The move significantly enhances Garmin’s appeal to users who rely heavily on WhatsApp for communication. Previously, Garmin smartwatches offered limited messaging options. Now, individuals can stay connected without needing to pull out their phones – a critical benefit for athletes, outdoor enthusiasts, or anyone who wants to minimize distractions during activities.

Key Features and Functionality

The WhatsApp integration allows users to:

  • Read and respond to messages using the watch’s built-in keyboard.
  • Receive incoming calls and accept or decline them.
  • View the 10 most recent messages in their chat history.

Garmin has also emphasized that all messages shared through the device are protected with end-to-end encryption, ensuring privacy.

Garmin’s Position in the Market

Garmin consistently ranks among the top manufacturers of fitness trackers, particularly favored by runners and those prioritizing sleep tracking accuracy. Recent tests by CNET named the Garmin Venu 4 as the most accurate smartwatch for heart rate monitoring on Android devices.

“By bringing a global messaging brand like WhatsApp to select Garmin smartwatches, we’re giving customers another meaningful way to stay connected,” stated Susan Lyman, Garmin’s VP of Consumer Sales and Marketing.

This integration is part of a broader trend toward more versatile smartwatches that blur the line between fitness tracking and full-fledged mobile connectivity. It also suggests that Garmin is actively seeking ways to compete with rivals like Apple and Samsung, which already offer extensive app ecosystems on their wearables.

The addition of WhatsApp to Garmin smartwatches represents a step toward more seamless and convenient mobile communication for users on the go.
