Red Dead Redemption Now Available on Mobile: How to Play

19

Fifteen years after its initial release on PC and consoles, Rockstar Games’ critically acclaimed Red Dead Redemption is now available on iOS and Android devices. The mobile version includes the original game and the Undead Nightmares expansion. The key detail: It’s free for Netflix subscribers, otherwise costing $40 through app stores.

System Requirements and Access

To play, your device must meet certain specifications. Android users need Android 11 or higher, 6GB of RAM, and either a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7/8 processor or a MediaTek Dimensity 9000 Plus. Apple users require an iPhone 11 or newer. If your device is compatible, follow these steps:

  1. Open the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android).
  2. Search for Red Dead Redemption and select the Netflix version.
  3. Download the game.
  4. Launch the game and sign in with your Netflix account.
  5. Select your profile and complete the download.

You can also access Red Dead Redemption through the Netflix app’s dedicated Games section.

Choosing the Right Controls

The game offers three control schemes: touch controls, standard controllers, and mobile controllers. While touch controls are functional, they are far from ideal for extended gameplay sessions. The game was designed for physical controls, and touch inputs will require awkward thumb positioning to move, aim, and shoot.

For the best experience, a controller is recommended. Options include dedicated mobile controllers like the Razer Kishi or Backbone One (for iPhone/Android) and larger models like the Kishi Ultra or GameSir G8 Plus for tablets. Alternatively, PlayStation or Xbox controllers connect via Bluetooth, but this requires propping up your device for comfortable play.

The original Red Dead Redemption was built around precise aiming and quick reactions; touch controls will inevitably fall short of that experience.

Why This Matters

The release of Red Dead Redemption on mobile represents a growing trend: major game titles are moving to subscription-based mobile platforms. This gives Netflix a significant advantage in attracting gamers, while simultaneously broadening the reach of the game. The success of this port could signal similar moves from other developers.

This also highlights the increasing power of modern smartphones, which can now handle demanding games like Red Dead Redemption without significant compromises. However, device compatibility remains a barrier, limiting access to a subset of mobile users.
