The Unexpected Fix for Broken AirPods Max: A Deep Freeze Solution

10

Apple’s premium AirPods Max headphones, despite their $549 price tag, have been plagued by a peculiar failure mode: an inexplicable shutdown indicated by three flashing amber lights. Frustrated owners have discovered an unconventional workaround – placing the headphones in the freezer. This isn’t a joke; numerous reports suggest chilling the devices can temporarily revive them.

The issue seems to stem from microscopic cracks developing in the internal wiring over time, particularly in the swiveling earcups, which rotate 90 degrees for storage. These cracks disrupt the electrical connection. Freezing the headphones causes the surrounding materials to contract, momentarily re-establishing contact between the broken wires. The fix isn’t permanent, but it buys time until a replacement is purchased or the issue worsens.

Another possible solution involves cleaning the internal contacts with a SIM ejector tool and alcohol, but its effectiveness is less clear. Apple has yet to address this design flaw, leaving consumers to rely on low-tech workarounds. The new AirPods Max 2, set to release in early April, may inherit the same susceptibility to this issue given its similar design.

For now, if your AirPods Max are unresponsive, the freezer might be your last resort. Just remember to remove the magnetic earcups first so you don’t freeze your ears along with the headphones.
